MAKAR SANKRANTI is a traditional Indian festival and one of the highly auspicious days, which is dedicated to the worship of Surya Bhagwan or the Sun God. Every year, the festival is celebrated on January 14.
It is the day when the sun enters into the zodiac Capricorn or Makara Rashi, which is called Uttarayana Punyakalam to herald the arrival of spring season and new harvest time.
Makar Sankranti is observed throughout India by various communities with some variations. In north India, it is the time of Maghi or Lohri.
The ways in which the day is observed in various states go as follows.
Bengal: The Ganga Sagar Mela and Pithey parban
Assam: Bhogali Bihu
Orissa: Makar Mela
Tamil Nadu: Pongal (Harvesting festival)
Andhra Pradesh: Sankranthi
Gujarat and Rajasthan: Uttarayan (noted for the kite flying events)
Makar Sankranti as one of the major harvest festival is celebrated with some distinct names and rituals in different parts of the country. In northern and western India it is celebrated with great zeal and fervour.
