Vetran Conngress leader and four time Chief Minister of Kerala and former Union Minister Kannoth Karunakaran died at a private hospital Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
Ventilator support was resumed on Wednesday for the 93-year old leader after he suffered acute breathing trouble following a stroke at the Ananthapuri Hospital, where he was admitted on 10th December.
At the time of his demise, family members, including son, daughter and other state Congress supporters were by his side.
Born on 15th July 1918, Karunakaran gave up studies to join Indian National Congress as a freedom fighter.
He was elected seven times consecutively to the Kerala Legislative Assembly since 1967 and served as Chief Minister of Kerala four times -- 1977-78, 1981-1982, 1982-1987 and 1991-1995.
Karunakaran was elected thrice to Rajya Sabha, and twice to the Lok Sabha.
He was a member of the Rajya Sabha during 1995-97, 1997-98 and 2004-2005.
He represented Thiruvananthapuram in Lok Sabha in 1998 and Mukundapuram in 1999.
He also served as the Home minister of Kerala, and Minister for Industries at the centre in Narasimha Rao Government from 1995-96.
Congress leaders and other political outfits have condoled the demise of renowned politician.
