Former West Bengal chief minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray died at his south Kolkata residence on Saturday at about 6.50 PM following renal failure. He is survived by his wife Maya Ray.
Ray, 90, was West Bengals chief minister 1972-77. He served as Punjab governor 1986-89. In 1991, he was sent as ambassador to the US, where he remained from 1992 to 1996.
A confidant of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 70s, he was appointed union minister (in-charge of West Bengal affairs) by her in 1971.
Ray was educated at Kolkatas Presidency College and was then called to the Bar in England. He also captained the Presidency College cricket team.
Ray was a grandson of revolutionary freedom fighter Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.
