New Bullet-Proof Bras for German Policewomen

Three thousand female members of Germany's police force are to receive what the media Thursday labelled "bullet-proof bras."

These bras are meant to better protect policewomen who wear bullet-proof vests, the German police said.

When policewomen wear normal bras with metal parts underneath a bullet-proof vest, there is a slight safety risk. "The impact of a bullet can push the metal and plastic bits of the bra into an officer's body, causing serious injury," said Carmen Kibat, an adviser for equal opportunity in the federal police force and the policewoman who started the push for the bulletproof bras.

Without under-wire or metal fasteners that can lodge into flesh on impact with a bullet, the new bras named "Wonderbras" look similar to sports bras, letting them both support and protect.

The bras are white, made from cotton or polyester and padded. They also have the word Polizei (Police) printed at the bottom.

"Wonderbras" have been distributed to female officers in airports, train stations, and border crossings. But for individual police woman, the new bras "are optional" so far.
