UNESCO launches education kit on HIV/AIDS

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the launch of a new kit providing information on education policies on HIV/AIDS, according to official sources.

"This kit provides technical advice on policies to develop and implement, on the required appropriations and the implementation of programs related to education and HIV, under the UNAIDS Global Initiative on education and HIV-AIDS (EDUCAIDS)," the UN agency said a statement.

UNESCO, as a leader in the EDUCAIDS initiative, has come up with this resource kit in close collaboration with the education ministries of UN member countries, other UN agencies as well as international organizations, said the statement.

The EDUCAIDS initiative has two main objectives, namely to prevent the spread of HIV thanks to the promotion of education and to also protect the education system from the adverse effects of the epidemic.

On the one hand, the policies advocated by the UNESCO relate to the quality of education, including content, programs and learning materials, training and support for educators.

On the other hand, the policies also cover critical areas such as management and systems, approaches and points of entry type, according to the statement.

This kit has been prepared in readiness for the 17th International AIDS Conference that is scheduled to be held in Mexico City, Mexico, from August 3 to 8 this year, according to the Paris-based UN agency.

During the conference, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to join some 20,000 participants from across the world in attending the meeting, which will be taking place in Latin America for the first time.
